CHECKING TO SEE IF THE PAPER IS REAL RECYCLD

Very few products that claim to be “recycled” recycled are actually made from paper scrap that has served a purpose and has been recovered through domestic and industrial recycling . Unless a recycled claim clearly says made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper only it usually is false or has used trick wording. Just claiming to be “100% recycled’ means little as it may be just recycled forest or the mill broke or slurry is recycled that is standard virgin paper manufacturing methodology. When checking with fair trading departments they say unless you actually have suffered a loss from the purchase of a product that has being sold with false claims there is nothing they can do.

To see if paper product is real recycled a close inspection can be made looking for micro flickers of colour in the paper. Usually if thin paper it is not recycled as when the scrap paper is broken down the fiber is shortened , thus the paper needs to be thicker to have strength. Thus Ecocern brown recycled copy paper and bags are made from thicker brown recycled paper thus genuine recycled.

FALSE OR TRICK WORDING RECYCLED CLAIMS

Unfortunately almost all recycled clams on so called “recycled paper” products are false or use trick wording and so are pretend recycled.  A few examples of this are:

“made with” as opposed to “made from” . Made with means in association with not made from.

“use recycled brown paper bags” that does not mean the product is recycled at all. Often used on made in China thin brown bags.

“100% recycled” does not mean the paper is actually made from paper scrap that is recovered and reconstituted into paper again.

“recyclable” does not mean “recycled” but able to be recycled like most products are.

There is a large multinational wood chip company that makes all brands of white copy paper in Australia and almost has a total monopoly on fine paper products who’s chairman had to design because they got caught lying about their products being recycled in Japan where false claims are taken seriously.

To be genuine recycled a paper needs to be 100% post-consumer recycled and be made only from domestic paper scrap and industrial paper scrap like cartons and preferably unbleached. Often paper manufacturers claim a product to be recycled because mill broke or the paper slurry is reused , that is standard virgin paper manufacturing methodology. Kraft paper is not recycled but often sold as recycled in the form of wrapping paper or thin brown paper bags. Beware as the internet is full of eco-shysters making false recycled claims.
